Why True Detective?

I started season one a few weeks ago at the recommendation of a friend. After only a few minutes I was pulled into this show. While it did take a few questions to figure out who all the characters were, I found the plot amazing, and the stunning cinematography. As a lover of true crime and symbolism I thought that True Detective would make an excellent pop culture choice to analyze the religious elements of the show. There is a presence of pop religion in the show being Christianity, while the more sinister and grim aspects of religion are human sacrifice, religious symbols, and cults.
