Cult Beliefs

Another aspect of the cult that viewers are left in the dark about is that of the belief system used for this cult. As noted before, some fans believe that the cult is a mix of different religions while other fans refer to the cult as a pagan-satanists. What is known about this cult is that their rituals involve the rape and mutilation of people (on the show it is shown to be of an adult sex worker and young girls, with more mummified dead bodies). The Dora Lang murder was said to be done in a primitive fashion by an archaeologist who works with the detectives (30, 31).

Many of the known members of the cult have connections to a Christian Church program that set up schools for rural youth. From these schools, cult members find their child victims for sacrifice. Earl Childress (one of the last key members in the cult as well as the antagonist of the show) was the repairman/groundskeeper at the school, which allowed him to form a connection with these children. Another member is the leader of a church and related to Governor Tuttle which is how the cult can cover up this systematic abuse (32).
